- Children are assessed too: see the child ADHD assessment page.
What does an ADHD psychiatrist do?
An ADHD psychiatrist confirms the diagnosis, looks for other conditions that mimic or accompany ADHD, prescribes medication where it fits and follows the treatment over time. A licensed psychiatrist prescribes controlled ADHD medicines only where UAE rules allow.
At your appointment the psychiatrist tells you which ADHD medication you can be prescribed and which other steps help, such as CBT.

How ADHD is diagnosed and treated: what the research shows
The sections below follow the order of a typical treatment path: diagnosis, first treatment, therapy and follow-up.
How is ADHD diagnosed in adults?
The DSM-5-TR criteria require at least 5 symptoms of inattention or at least 5 of hyperactivity and impulsivity in adolescents from 17 years and in adults. The symptoms occur often, persist for at least 6 months, appear in more than one setting, began before age 12 and impair work, study or social life. Other physical or mental health conditions that could explain the symptoms need to be excluded. A good or poor response to a stimulant cannot confirm or refute the diagnosis.
Which treatment comes first?
The combination of CBT and medication is preferred, and stimulants are the first-line medicines. A meta-analysis of 11 trials with 1,991 adults (MĂ©száros 2009) found a Cohen’s d of 0.67 for stimulants and 0.59 for non-stimulants. A network meta-analysis of 51 trials with 8,131 adults (Cortese, Lancet Psychiatry 2018) found amphetamines slightly ahead of methylphenidate after about 12 weeks (SMD -0.29).
Does therapy add something to medication?
In a trial with 88 adults, 12 group CBT sessions with or without a stimulant gave better results at the end of treatment and at 3 months, and the results were similar at 6 months (Cherkasova, J Atten Disord 2020).
What does treatment change over time?
Among 2,319,450 patients in a US insurance database, the collision risk was 38 percent lower in men (OR 0.62) and 42 percent lower in women (OR 0.58) in the months on ADHD medication (Chang, JAMA Psychiatry 2017). In a Swedish registry study of about 149,000 people, medication was linked to lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.79) (Li, JAMA 2024). In a cohort of 148,581 people with ADHD (Zhang, BMJ 2025), medication was linked to lower risks of suicidal behaviour (RR 0.83), substance misuse (RR 0.85) and criminal convictions (RR 0.87).
How does follow-up work?
Treatment starts at a low dose, and the dose rises about weekly. Check-ups take place about once a month until the dose is stable, with blood pressure and pulse at each visit. An ECG is added with heart disease or heart symptoms.
